Faith Over Feelings: What the Bible Really Says

Choosing God's Truth Over Changing Emotions
Published by SALTY SAINTS
We've all heard the advice:
"Follow your heart."
It sounds inspiring.
It feels empowering.
But it's not what the Bible teaches.
Scripture never tells us to let our emotions determine truth. Instead, God repeatedly calls His people to trust Him—even when their feelings tell them otherwise.
Faith isn't the absence of emotion.
Faith is choosing to trust God above our emotions.
What Is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1 says:
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Faith is confidence in God's character and His promises, even when circumstances are uncertain.
Faith doesn't depend on how we feel today.
It depends on who God is.
Feelings Change. God Doesn't.
Every person experiences emotions.
Joy.
Fear.
Anger.
Loneliness.
Discouragement.
Those feelings are real.
But they are not always reliable guides.
God's truth remains constant even when our emotions change.
Proverbs 3:5–6
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."
Our own understanding—including our emotional reactions—is limited.
God sees what we cannot.
Jeremiah 17:9
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
The Bible warns that our hearts can mislead us.
That doesn't mean emotions are evil.
It means they should not replace God's wisdom.
Jesus Experienced Emotion
Jesus wept.
He felt sorrow.
He experienced anguish.
He showed compassion.
He became angry at injustice.
Yet Jesus never allowed emotion to lead Him into sin.
He remained perfectly obedient to the Father's will.
Faith Is Obedience
There will be days when:
You don't feel like praying.
You don't feel like forgiving.
You don't feel like reading Scripture.
You don't feel hopeful.
Faith chooses obedience anyway.
Romans 12:2
"Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..."
The Christian life isn't about chasing feelings.
It's about allowing God's Word to reshape our thinking.
Walking by Faith
Paul reminds believers:
"For we walk by faith, not by sight."
(2 Corinthians 5:7)
Walking by faith means trusting God's promises over what our eyes see and what our emotions suggest.
Practical Ways to Live by Faith
Instead of asking:
"How do I feel?"
Ask:
- What does Scripture say?
- What honors God?
- What reflects Christ?
- Am I responding in faith or fear?
Final Thoughts
Emotions are a gift from God.
They help us experience joy, compassion, grief, and love.
But they were never meant to become our compass.
God's Word is.
Faith chooses truth when feelings fluctuate.
Faith obeys when emotions resist.
Faith trusts because God is faithful.
